Appreciating The History Significance of World Oceans Day

According to UNESCO, the concept of a World Oceans Day was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as a way to celebrate our world’s shared ocean and our personal connection to the sea, as well as to raise awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help protect it. The two conservation organizations, UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) coordinates in partnership with DOALOS the official United Nation World Oceans Day Portal which is instrumental in building support for ocean awareness events on 8 June in 2002. In 2008, United Nations officially designated June 8 as World Oceans Day. The 70 percent of the planet Earth is ocean, it is important to conserve and protect marine life.  In addition, the oceans also produce at least 50 percent of oxygen for humans according to National Ocean Service. World Oceans Day is an annual celebration that is celebrated in various parts of the world, including in our country, Indonesia. Wikipedia mentioned Indonesia is a country surrounded by oceans, where Indonesia has a sea area of 96,079.15 square kilometers.  This area makes Indonesia the largest archipelagic region in the world. This is essentially a moment to raise public awareness of the importance of maintaining marine ecosystems so that future generations can still enjoy marine products to the fullest.

The sea is currently polluted by garbage and industrial waste. One of the causes of water pollution, including the sea, is the use of detergents that are not environmentally friendly.  The use of excessive detergents contains harmful ingredients that can damage the aquatic and marine ecosystems. Based on Human rights at Sea, the theme for last year, 2021 World Oceans Day is "The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods".  This theme was raised to campaign for the importance of marine ecosystems and their role for humans. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the commemoration of World Oceans Day will be conducted through teleconferences and online seminars inviting international marine experts to discuss marine biodiversity, the relationship between the oceans and their ecosystems, and the latest marine science discoveries Based on Human rights at Sea, the theme for last year, 2021 World Oceans Day is "The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods".  This theme was raised to campaign for the importance of marine ecosystems and their role for humans.
